An Up and Coming Artist

Before I introduce you to one of the freshest artistic minds of our time, I'll quickly address my absence. I was MIA for a bit there. I had a nasty cold that turned into both of my ears being infected. I was down for the count. Thankfully, I've been feeling better for a while now, but I'm trying to catch up on everything around here. My sweet friend, Jessica, says I should blog everyday, and while that sounds like fun, I'd need someone to take care of all these boys and do the laundry and the housework and well then I wouldn't have much to write about, would I? ;) Anyway, for now we'll just take it one day at a time. But I know you're dying to hear about that artist.

For a few weeks, this little guy has been fascinated with any writing utensil that he can find. He'll squat down and try to use a marker or pen (with their lid on) all over the floor. He will carry said writing utensil around for a very long time. When I let him use the sidewalk chalk last month, I was surprised how much he enjoyed it and how much it kept his attention.

Then last week, he wandered into the school room and found a crayon. He bent down to do his scribble on the floor thing that he does and I caught him before he got there. Then I thought, why not give him some paper and see what he does. He sat on the floor and made lines on the paper for over 20 minutes. That might not sound crazy to you, but he's a 17 month old boy. He doesn't do anything for 20 minutes solid. This morning, he was wandering around the house--read looking for something to dump out or destroy ;)--and I thought, "let's give it a try again." So, I got him a piece of paper and some crayons and he went to town. He was SO happy. He sat contentedly for 25 minutes and only stopped because it was naptime. Here's a sampling of the artist at work:

And finally, a sampling of his work:

I don't know why I'm surprised when my kids love creating. I mean, we are made in the image of our Creator, right? Therefore, we're made to create. I love when these boys remind me of simple truths. Who knew that these would be his favorite toy? I can just hear Sam chiming in with his trump card answer, "God did, Mom! God knew it!" :)

Love the sight of your little guy creating. Even after watching five kids become "artists" in their own special ways, I never grow tired of witnessing the Creator's creativity flowing through little hands and minds. Blessings as you love on your boys!
